The Screaming Jets - Do Ya
It's been a time for albums to come out that many thought would never see the light of day. ACDC's Black Ice was released to rave reviews and has topped the charts worldwide ending a long period of inactivity from the hard rock legends. What has gone unnoticed is that another Australian band is back on the scene.
Yes after torturing fans for years, The Screaming Jets have returned. Their new release Do Ya is their first full length album since 2000 when the brilliant Scam came out. So was the wait worth it?
The answer is kind of. Do Ya needs a few listens to be fully appreciated, which makes it different to any other Jets album. This is easily the most mature they have ever sounded as the punk fueled angst has almost disappeared. While this may put off some, have no fear this is still a rock album.
With this being a less aggressive affair the mid tempo stuff really has to shine and thankfully it does. The songs Supersize, Change the World and the super impressive Running Blind could all be played live. When it comes to the soft numbers Mary Jane is a waste but Falls in Place fits in nicely. For me though I'm all about the short sharp tracks and mercifully there's 141 and Heaven Help Me to appease me, it's a shame there were not a couple more in this vein.
There's no doubt that Do Ya is slightly disappointing, that won't stop me from talking it up though as this is more a sign of how much I rate their previous efforts than anything else. Fact is no one does Aussie rock better and thank God they're still around because there aren't many bands left that play this music.
