Vanishing Point Live At The Corner Hotel
As Geelong will tell you going back to back is difficult to do. I know I try to avoid it. Still despite struggling after Testament, I found myself out again the very next night. That's because Vanishing Point were playing and there's no way I could miss that.
This was the fourth time I'd be seeing them this year and yet I anticipated something special. On the other occasions I've seen Vanishing Point in 2008 they've played in bigger venues when supporting other bands. On this night they were back at the Corner, which is where I prefer them to play.
I turned up to find a reasonable crowd with plenty of regulars in attendance. Hanging around I was approached by one of my new heroes Don, the keyboardist of Divine Ascension who remembered my name, which boosted my ego way too much. I also caught up with Chris of Vanishing Point who the gang and I all regard as metal royalty.
Getting the night underway was Vampora. Fearing I'd seen them once too often this year, they impressed me more than I imagined. This was definitely their best performance and I will actually be looking forward to seeing them again. They did away with the dark doomy material, solely concentrating on melodic rock. This is what they should stick to as it suits them more. Bizarrely the song they played from Final Fantasy was the standout.
Divine Ascension were up next, a band everyone needs to check out. I am incredibly biased towards this band because their sound appeals to me so much. Keyboards are emphasised and they're unbelievably heavy for their stlye, which makes them perfect in my eyes. For sheer brilliance you couldn't go past the song, which I believe was called The Battlefield or the guitar solo during Vision Divine. I am a fan for life.
Finally Vanishing Point took to the stage. Even with a fairly predictable set, they were amazing. No band does melodic metal better. I was delighted to be back in close proximity as it's much easier to be apart of the fist pumping and chanting.
I enjoyed the new songs the most this time around. I Within I was the best track and Wake Me also went well. Of the rest I'd go with If Only I. It always gets me going no matter how many times I've heard it. Vanishing Point brought the night to an end with Once A Believer, which was a touch disappointing as I much rather Hollow.
Afterwards I took my time leaving as there were plenty of people to catch up with. Eventually I get the boot, which was kind of a relief considering it had been a big couple of days.
Vanishing Point are currently touring Europe with Pagan's Mind and Sonata Arctica and if this performance was anything to go by they were ready. Now hopefully they'll get the exposure they deserve.
